On behalf of the New York City Urban Debate League and PS 161 Pedro Albizu Campos, you are cordially invited to the NYCUDL Middle School City Championship Tournament on March 11th and March 12th for two days of exciting, fun and intense debate.

 

We will offer three debate formats: Public Forum Debate, Parliamentary Debate, and Congressional Debate.

 

Judges’ training will be available for individuals interested in judging Public Forum, Parliamentary and Congressional Debate.

Registration

 

Registration will take place on Tabroom.

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

·      All participants are required to have competed in three (3) UDL sponsored tournaments during the 2016-2017 debate season to compete (NOTE: If a team has competed in two (2) tournaments, the City Championship can count as their third tournament) THE CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE DIVISON IS AN EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE.

·      Students must have submitted their NYCUDL consent form.

·      All students competing in the City Championship MUST be representing their ENROLLED MIDDLE SCHOOL located in one of the five boroughs in New York City (Manhattan, Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn or Staten Island). NO INDEPENDENT ENTRIES ARE ALLOWED.

·      All teams/schools are REQUIRED to attend both days of the tournament until the end of the preliminary debates or when the team is eliminated from the tournament. Teams/schools are not allowed to attend only 1 day of the tournament

·      Each school can send up to two (2) teams per division in Public Forum and two (2) in Parliamentary debate.

·      Each school can send up to four (4) students in Congressional Debate.

 

THE TOURNAMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REJECT TEAMS/SCHOOLS FROM COMPETING IF THEY DO NOT MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS.

 

There will be TWO divisions (Novice and Open) offered at the City Championship tournament for Public Forum and Parliamentary debate,

 

There will be ONE Open division offered at the City Championship tournament for Congressional Debate, Open.

 

A student MUST enter in the Open division for Public Forum or Parliamentary Debate if:

1.     The student has competed in a previous season of debate (in or outside of the NYC Urban Debate League).

2.     If the student wishes to compete in Open.

 

A student MUST enter in the Novice division for Public Forum or Parliamentary Debate if:

1.     All members of the team are first-year debaters.

2.     A student competed in at most one (1) tournament in a previous season.

 

Students MAY NOT double enter in multiple events.

 

ONLINE REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR ALL ENTRIES IS 5 PM – MARCH 8TH, 2017

 

 

If a school registered for the tournament and does not provide teams on the registration, the registration will be considered incomplete and will not be accepted, therefore making the school ineligible to compete. This rule applies to the judge requirement (see judging section)

 

Each school MUST provide one judge for every two (2) teams competing (for all divisions that are registered for).

We will offer judge training for new/inexperienced judges.

Judges must check in on the morning of the tournament on BOTH Saturday and Sunday.

 

ALL JUDGES ARE REQUIRED TO STAY IN THE TOURNAMENT UP TO THE FINAL ROUND OF ALL EVENTS.
