Barrington Invitational

2015 — IL/US

BARRINGTON INVITATIONAL (LD/PF) DEBATE TOURNAMENT

@ BARRINGTON HIGH SCHOOL 12/05/2015

Dear Lincoln-Douglas & Public Forum Debate Coach,

The Barrington High School Debate program would like to invite you to our LD and PF tournament on Saturday, December 5, 2015.   We are excited to have your debaters join us in just a few weeks to end the year with one more debate tournament.

We will run five rounds in Lincoln-Douglas on the November/ December NSDA resolution. We will also run five rounds in Public Forum on the December NSDA debate topic. Current topics can be found here: http://www.speechanddebate.org/topics

The top three competitors in each division will receive awards. Speaker awards will be given to the top five speakers in each division.

We will be using tabroom.com for registration and all other tournament information.  If you do not have a tabroom.com account, please take a few minutes to create an account. Using tabroom.com will allow for online balloting which will enable the tournament to run smoothly, efficiently, and on-time, as well as being eco-friendly. IHSA is going to try to use tabroom.com for the state finals, so acquainting yourself with the system currently will help you in the future. We will have a tabroom.com support desk at the tournament available for balloting and registration help on the day of the tournament.

Additionally, our varsity captain created a public Facebook event for the tournament that can be found at “Barrington Invitational.” Information and updates will be provided for students on the Facebook event page, so please encourage your debaters to add themselves.

We will be utilizing all available classrooms (currently 100 classrooms) to maximize the size of each pool to 32 competitors. Hence, we are capping each school at four entries per division.

Registration must be completed online at tabroom.com by 11:59 PM on November 30.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at bdenesha@barrington220.org or call/text at 224-622-3557. If you have any drops on the day of the tournament, please call me immediately.

GENERAL TOURNAMENT INFORMATION:

Divisions and Rounds

Both the Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas divisions will have competition at the varsity, junior varsity, and novice levels.

Novice consists of students in their first season of Debate (any division, including Policy and Congress). JV consists of students in their first or second seasons of Debate. Students in their third or fourth season of Debate must debate in Varsity.  If you are not certain which division your entries should be placed in, just ask the tournament director.

Each division and level will consist of five single-flighted rounds. Rounds three through five will be power-matched based on all previous rounds. Since these rounds will not be lag-powered, it does make for a longer tournament.

Fees

The cost per PF entry is $25.00 and per LD entry is $20.00. If finances are a major problem for your school, especially if you have a new team and never attended our tournament before, please contact the tournament director to discuss options.

Judging Obligations

All judges are expected to arrive at Barrington no later than 8 AM for tournament announcements in the Student Cafeteria.

LD: One full judge is required for every two debaters in the Lincoln-Douglas division. Trained adults and/or coaches, or college-level judges with LD debate experience, are required. Please contact the tournament director if this is not the case.

PF: One full judge for every two teams/pairs. Trained adults and/or coaches, or college-level judges with PF debate experience, are required. Please contact the tournament director if this is not the case.

Your school will be charged $150 for every qualified judge you are short, including half-judges (since a whole judge is needed to make up for the missing person). We do not want to charge you a judge fee, so please communicate with the tournament director ahead of time if you anticipate being short judges. Barrington can in some cases provide qualified judges for you to hire, but there are very few available.  If you are not able to bring enough judges to cover your entries, reach out to other schools in the area as they may have extra judges for hire.

All judges are expected to be available for the duration of the tournament (8 AM to ~5 PM). Tournaments aren't perfect, so delays may happen, but we've tried to anticipate potential problems.

Disclosing: Judges are expected to completely and thoroughly fill out each ballot, but cannot disclose their decision. If judges want to provide a BRIEF critique at the end of the round, that is fine, but it does not replace a written ballot that clearly articulates a reason for decision based on the arguments in the round. These ballots are invaluable to coaches and students. If you are using the ballots onTabroom.com you will be able to post notes for the separate noted for the debaters in the round as well as posting your RFD.

FOOD

Student Concessions (breakfast items and lunch snacks & drinks) will be sold, but pizzas must be ordered in advance.  If you would rather e-mail me your pizza orders, please do so by 11/30/2015. Cheese pizza= $15.00 and Sausage or Pepperoni= $16.00  You can pay for pizza separately or add it to your entry check.

Judges will have complimentary breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks served in the Faculty Cafeteria.
