NEW THIS YEAR:
Policy Debate is being offered! If you have interest in competing, that’s great! Not sure what policy debate is? That’s okay! This is being designed to be as accessible as possible and we would love to have you. However, there are a few guidelines you and your students need to be made aware of:
-
We are using the novice limits and the novice resource packet outlined by the NDCA (National Debate Coaches Association). You can find the link to the resource packet here: https://www.debatecoaches.org/resources/novice
-
The AFFs and plan texts outlined in this packet are most likely what SFR and SFL will be reading, however, any AFF that fits under these limits will be acceptable
-
NEGs are allowed to read any disadvantages and case arguments. A Counter Plan is being allowed. It is the EU CP which is available in the novice resource packet.
-
Topicality and Kritiks are allowed but the Kritik will be limited to the Security K found in the novice resource packet. This differs slightly from SFL’s Novice Tournament. The reason for this is to introduce more ways for negatives to creatively and effectively engage with the Affirmative.
-
All coaches will be provided with the plan texts AFFs and any off case arguments (DAs/CP/K/T) NEGs will be running. We do this because we understand that this is going to be a new event for a lot of you and we want you and your students to be as prepared as possible. I will have a spreadsheet available for you all to access and edit so email me once you know that information.
-
Two rounds will be run. This is to ensure that you get an AFF and a NEG round.
-
For judging, we may end up with schools judging themselves since we’re anticipating a small field of entries. For the policy pool, we’d like to prioritize judges who have policy experience. If you don’t currently have judges who know policy debate, don’t worry about it–we’re working on assembling some so that we can provide coverage. Please notify your judges that there’s time built-in for post-round feedback & questions from the students, so we (and the debaters) will anticipate that.
On a personal note:
Tony and I love this event! We have been working very hard to figure out the best way for this event to flourish again. Having more active participation is crucial for that endeavor. Please reach out if you have any additional questions or need any additional resources.
