CASLV Middle School Invitational

Dear Middle School/Junior High School Speech & Debate Coaches:

 

The Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas Speech and Debate Program and administration are excited to host a middle school/junior high Speech and Debate Tournament to be held Saturday, April 25th, 2015 at Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas Sandy Ridge Campus- 1051 Sandy Ridge Avenue Henderson, NV 89052.  Students in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grades are invited. We will be offering the following speech events: Original Oratory, Expos, HI, DI, DUO, Prose and Poetry, or Impromptu. For debate students have the option of entering Student Congress or Public forum.

 

Each student may enter one speech event and one debate event. Students are encouraged to enter in a speech event and a debate event.  

 

For this tournament I will be using Tabroom.com for Tournament Registration. It is a completely free service. Below is the link. You will need to create an account and input your team again. I will email the specific link for my tournament once it is finished being set up which will be no later than February 1stwww.tabroom.com. Students should be dressed in business casual or business dress.  Boys should wear slacks and not jeans, a polo or button down shirt, and a tie is optional. Girls should wear a skirt and blouse, or a dress, or dress slacks with a dress shirt.

 

There will be an awards presentation at the close of the tournament.

Middle School/Junior High Speech & Debate Tournament:  General Information

 

  1. Cost: $8 per student + $10 Team fee. Please make checks payable to Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas you can bring them the day of the tournament or mail them to Coral Academy of Science Attn: Amanda Sloan 1051 Sandy Ridge Avenue Henderson, NV 89052. Tabroom creates an invoice for you however I am still working out the meal option. Attached is a fee calculation sheet.
  2. A pre-paid lunch option is available for purchase to students and chaperones.  The price of the lunch will be $6.00 and include pizza, drink and a dessert. Please email me the number of meals you are ordering no later than April 17th.  There will be a snack bar.
  3. Deadline to enter students:  Friday, April 24, 2015

6.  Public Forum Topic – Resolved:  On balance, the benefits of genetically modified foods outweigh the harms.

 

  1. Each session of Congress will last for 45 minutes.  All speeches will be no more than 90 seconds. Two cross-examination questions may be asked after each speech.

 

  1. There is no minimum time for speech events, maximum time is 10 minutes. 7 minutes for PPI.

 

  1. If a student is registered for Public Forum debate and their partner does not show up they may switch to Student Congress on the day of the event.

 

 

  1. A teacher or administrator from your school must accompany the students for the entire day.
