Suggested Hotels:
We haven’t made a hotel block because there are simply a ton of good hotel options from which you can choose in a city as large as Houston and the campus hotel, while nice, is a good deal more expensive than others that are within reasonable driving distance. Houston, for better or worse, is a driving city, so if you need a shuttle of some sort, don’t hesitate to ask and we’ll get you where you need to be, when you need to be there.
We’ve made a list of hotels that are good deals for what they offer. Emphasis is on “for what they offer.” We’ve put one in each neighborhood that had decent values and something of interest.
Please, please, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about a particular hotel or location. We’re new to the area ourselves, but we’ll happily go scout something for you if we don’t know it.
Two REALLY important suggestions:
1. Do not stay out at Bush-Intercontinental airport. That is at least 40 minutes from campus and you never know about traffic on I-45 north of the center city.
2. Unless you are staying at Hobby Airport, stay “inside the loop,” i.e., inside of I-610.
On Campus:
Hilton University of Houston
152/night
You can’t get closer than this. It’s the hotel for the University’s Conrad Hilton School of Hospitality Management. It’s literally on campus. It’s very nice. That being said, it’s not really walkable to much other than campus, so if you want to go out and do stuff on Friday night, you might consider an alternate location.
Hobby Airport:
Any national chain will be reasonable and it’s about a 15 minute drive to campus. Two warnings: it’s one of those somewhat worn-out and sad areas that isn’t so much unsafe as it is just kind of ugly and sad.
Texas Medical Center:
Hilton Houston Plaza/Medical Center
6633 Travis St., Houston, Texas, 77030
TEL: 1-713-313-4000
96/night
Sarah stayed here and says “it was nice.” It’s a 10-15 minute drive that avoids freeways (we live at the edge of the TMC, it’s very convenient). Parking in the Medical Center can be a problem/expensive. Good deal for a hotel of this amenity level, though.
Upper Kirby:
Four Points by Sheraton Houston Southwest
2828 Southwest Freeway
Houston, Texas 77098-4502 United States
Phone: (713) 942-2111 Fax: (713) 526-8709
69/night
This would be a 10-15 minute drive on Sat. morning. It’s in the Upper Kirby/Greenway neighborhood which has an unbelievable amount of food and things nearby. It’s yuppie paradise.
Galleria:
Aloft Houston by the Galleria
5415 Westheimer Road
Houston, Texas 77056 United States
Phone: (713) 622-7010 Fax: (713) 622-7025
89/night
This hotel is located a short distance from the Galleria, about a 15 minute drive from campus. I’m only including it because I think this is the singularly best non-mega hotel chain I’ve stayed at and this is a pretty good deal. The Galleria is also a very active and interesting neighborhood, particularly if you like shopping – this is the original Galleria – it’s nothing short of ridiculous.
Downtown:
Magnolia Hotel Houston
1100 Texas Avenue, Houston, TX 77002
888-915-1110
140/night
This is a swank little boutique hotel located downtown. About a 10-15 minute drive. Really nice, but downtown is a bit dead at night.
Four Seasons Hotel Houston
1300 Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010
250/night
Just kidding.
