SoCal Winter Debate Workshop

2020 — Online, CA/US

The SoCal Debate Society is hosting an online Winter Debate Workshop from Monday to Thursday, Dec. 28th-Dec. 31st. The Workshop offers high school and middle school debaters the chance to learn in a supportive setting in an advanced or novice track.

We are offering instruction and preparation in novice and intermediate Lincoln-Douglas, Big Questions, Public Forum and Parliamentary formats of debate. As in the past workshops, longtime coaches including Melan Jaich and Matt Conrad (La Reina), David Finnigan (Beverly Hills), Kevin Kunes (California Lutheran University) and Ryan Wallace (California State University-East Bay) along with debate alums from USC, Berkeley, UCLA and Santa Clara will serve as workshop instructors.

Classes will include lectures on the upcoming national debate topics, affirmative and negative strategies, topicality and stock issues, rebuttal strategies, and research techniques for CHSSA/NSDA debate formats including Public Forum and Big Questions/Lincoln Douglas. The workshop emphasizes small group education through debate labs led by experienced coaches who can help student manage tournament preparation and research.

The workshop will end with a tournament which will have five guaranteed preliminary debate rounds and then quarters, semi and final rounds. Before that the workshop will also feature expert guest lectures on debate theory and the current, announced debate topics for the spring semester. The schedule will allow time for supervised practice rounds and ample research. Evidence sets and briefs on the national topic will be supplied to every workshop participant in those events with selected topics.

We will pair partners for various debate formats based on requests and their level of competition. All our faculty either have taught at our program before or actively coach debate programs. College debaters will also be assisting to critique our debaters and will be judging the tournament competition along with former top debate alums. Students do not need to have a designated or preferred partner for team events to participate in the workshop.

Classes may be divided into intermediate/novice depending on enrollment. Debate formats may share some lectures but not topic discussions
