Simpson Storm Collegiate Invitational

2020 — Online, IA/US

Greetings from Iowa!  We hope to welcome you virtually to Simpson College in November for a three-day comprehensive tournament 11/13-11-15.  We are offering Public Forum & IPDA (Friday), all 11 NFA/AFA events (Saturday) plus duo improv, and NFA-LD & NPDA (Sunday).

FEES:

We are committed to keeping entry fees low.  IE entries are $5, single-person debate entries are $10, and team debate entries are $15. In the spirit of this, we will be mailing a nice champion award in all divisions with certificates for all other places. All sweepstakes awards (through third place) will receive a mailed award.

JUDGING:

We are asking teams to please cover your entries. Each debate judge covers two entries. Each speech judge covers six entries. Each hired judge for Simpson College must go through a background check and fill out employment paperwork. First-time judges require several weeks to process and are costly. We have a small group of judges we hire throughout the season and we compensate them appropriately. WE WANT YOUR JUDGES NOT YOUR MONEY. To keep the entry fees so affordable, at this point we are not accepting uncovered entries unless you expressly email us requesting judge coverage. **** Judge coverage is expensive:  $100 per uncovered debate entry, and $20 per uncovered IE slot.

PAYMENT:

Payment for fees needs to be made out to:
Simpson College c/o Speech & Debate
701 N “C” St
Indianola, IA 50125

We are not able to accept electronic or credit card payments. Please contact us if this creates a challenge for your team.

DOUBLE ENTRY:

Students may double enter in speech & two forms of debate.

More specifically:

Students may enter IPDA or PF and NPDA or LD

Students may enter 3 IE's in each flight pattern.

HOSTING:

The tournament will be hosted on tabroom.com with rounds occurring virtually on the 8X8 platform.

RULES:

We will follow the governing bylaws from the respective organizations. Details for running duo improvisation are noted below. Impromptu prompts will be distributed by the judge in a private chat window and an impromptu waiting room will be provided. Extemp questions will be posted by chat in the draw room. Any specific questions regarding rules can be emailed to deanopape@gmail.com

DUO IMPROVISATION

EVENT RULES: Preparation time is four minutes. Preparation time is separate from performance time. Performance time is a maximum of six minutes with a 30-second grace period. The judge should clarify with the students before they begin how time signals will be communicated and must then give hand signals as the contestants are performing to help them stay within the time limit. Students MAY time themselves. No make-up, costumes, props, or lighting are permitted, but a table and / or two chairs may be used. Doors and walls are considered props and must not be used. The scene must contain only two characters with equal sharing of dialogue. An introduction by one or both students is REQUIRED to set the scene, and a resolution of the conflict must be evident at the end of the scene. Excessive profanity, sexual innuendo, or excessive physicality (i.e. pushing, shoving, and striking) will not be tolerated. Contestants are to remain in the prep room until they are called. Once they have finished with their performance they may remain in the room until the round is complete, but it is not required.

JUDGES: Judges for duo improv will go to the judges lounge where they will receive a private message with characters, a situation, and a link to a waiting room. Judges will copy the text and report to their rounds, where they will go through time signal procedures with the competitors, and then dismiss everyone (except for the duo pair competing first) to the duo improv waiting room. Judges should then private message the competitors their characters and situation and begin prep time. After the duo pair is done, they should ask the judge for the names of the next contestants, and then go to the waiting room to acquire the next team. Judges should be aware that students may compete in the same room, may be wearing masks, or may compete in separate rooms. Please accommodate the needs of the students and recognize that they are bound by the rules established by their specific college or university, in particular when they compete in university or college academic or shared living spaces.  Judges should not penalize students who have to compete in separate spaces, and we encourage judges to recognize that students will be interacting with each other differently than the duo teams who are competing in the same rooms.

COMPETITORS: GO TO YOUR DUO IMPROV ROOM FIRST! Check in with the judge on their time signals and then report to the waiting room to be called to your room. For those who are double or triple-entered, have a clear plan with your partner of each other's events and order. Keep your duo improv judge informed of your plans. If you are listed first or second in the round, you should plan on doing duo improv FIRST unless your judge excuses you to other events. Keep in mind that you may keep more than one 8x8 room open in your browser at the same time.

Competitors in duo improv may perform in the same room, masked or unmasked, depending upon the rules of their college or university. Students may also compete in separate rooms. Students who compete in separate rooms should make arrangements for their own virtual preparation space during prep (for example, you can have a Zoom room open as well as 8x8). If this creates a hardship, please contact us and we will be happy to create a space on the platform for you to use.
