Technological Structure

The tournament will run out of one Zoom meeting. Debates will be held in breakout rooms, within that one Zoom meeting. All debaters, judges, and observers will start in the prep room (Main Room), and will be asked to rename themselves before every debate round. Rooms will be denoted with letters A, B, C, etc. 

The naming convention will be “Round number Room - Name.” If Luke DiMartino was debating in Room C in the third round, he'd name himself "3C - Luke DiMartino” in the prep room. In the 5 minutes between the renaming period ending and the start of prep, the Prep Room Director will put everyone into breakout rooms. The round number is not necessary, but it’s a good failsafe because it prevents people who do not rename themselves from being assigned into the breakout rooms from their last round.

Round Timing

All rounds should finish no more than 1.5 hours after posted start time. Judges, please give your RFD and comments to both debaters as succinctly as possible and return to the main room. 

For a round that begins at 1:00:

12:50 - All judges and debaters called back to prep room

1:00 - Pairings released. Renaming period begins.

1:05 - Renaming period ends. Breakout rooms assigned.

1:10 - Topic announced. Prep time begins.

1:30 - Debate round begins.

2:20 - Debate round ends. Decision must be submitted on Tab within 5-10 minutes of round ending, feedback begins.

2:35 - Feedback ends; All judges and debaters are called back to the prep room.

2:45 - Pairings released. Renaming period begins.

Tournament Schedule

Novice rounds will be in a Round Robin format. Varsity Rounds 1 and 2 are preset/random. Rounds 3 and 4 will be Hi-Lo powermatched. We expect all 4-0s and/or the highest seeded 3-1s to clear to Semifinals. 

Updated: Top 2 Novice Teams will debate in the Final Round!

1:00 PM - "Registration"/Info Session

1:25 PM - Round 1 Pairings released for both Varsity and Novice

1:55 PM - Round 1 must begin for both Varsity and Novice (Decisions due 3:00 at the latest, All feedback must be finished at 3:00 PM)

3:15 PM - Round 2 Pairings released for both Varsity and Novice

3:45 PM - Round 2 must begin for both Varsity and Novice (Decisions due 4:45 at the latest, All feedback must be finished at 4:50 PM)

4:55 - Regroup to Main Room for Final Announcements

Friday, August 7th, 2020

9:00 AM - Round 3 Pairings released for both Varsity and Novice 

9:30 AM - Round 3 must begin for both Varsity and Novice (Decisions due 10:30 at the latest, All feedback must be finished at 10:35 AM)

10:45 AM - Round 4 Pairings released for both Varsity and Novice 

11:15 AM - Round 4 must begin for both Varsity and Novice (Decisions due 12:15 at the latest, All feedback must be finished at 12:20 PM)

12:20 PM - 1:30 PM - Lunch Break

1:30 PM - Varsity Semis and Novice Finals Pairings released (Coinflip will be done in Prep Room)

2:00 PM - Varsity Semis and Novice Finals (Decisions due 3:00 at the latest, All feedback must be finished at 3:05 PM)

3:15 PM - Finals released for Varsity; Novice Debaters will watch the Varsity Final Round (Coinflip will be done in Prep Room)

3:45 PM - Varsity Finals (Decisions due 4:45 at the latest, All feedback must be finished at 4:50 PM)

5:00 PM - Awards and all results posted
