Phoenix Invitational

2019 — Phoenix, OR/US

We’re excited to host a tournament again this year! There are a few changes from last year, but we will still be including SPAR. Information about the tournament is below, please feel free to contact Coach Celine Farrimond (541) 535-2306 or celine.farrimond@phoenix.k12.or.us with any questions or issues that might come up. See you soon!

Registration & Lunch

All registration will be online at http://phoenixsd.tabroom.com. The deadline for adds and drops is Monday, October 28th by 5:00pm. Judge entries are due by the 30th of October at 5:00pm. If you need to make changes after this time, please text Celine at (541) 535-2306 with your school, the name of the student, and event details. You should also notify tournament staff of any changes upon arrival. We are exploring options for having concessions available on campus but this is still TBD mostly due to construction. There are several restaurants and Ray’s within walking distance as well. We offered an hour for lunch to allow students a few more options.

Tournament Fees

The entry fee for each school is $25. All events are $8 per entry except BQ, which we will not charge a fee for. We will be offering to waive the school entry fee for schools with 3+ entries in Big Questions (a team counts as 2). You can still have individual entries in BQ. Judges We are asking for 1 judge for every 2 entries in debate and 1 judge for every 5 entries in speech. If you are able to bring judges beyond your requirement, we would really appreciate it! We will provide judge training in the morning along with coffee/pastries and lunch later on. We will use all online ballots through Tabroom. Please make sure judges have linked Tabroom accounts and bring smart devices. If they are unable to bring their own device, we will have chromebooks available in the Library (Judges Lounge).

Spontaneous Argumentation (SPAR)

SPAR will be classified as a debate event this year. It is a 1 vs 1 debate of 13 minutes. The Proposition speaker will receive two resolutions, one serious (eg, Charter schools are good for education in America) and one not serious (eg, Wonder Woman is superior to Spiderman). The Prop speakers selects the resolution.

Here is the format:

Prop prep 1 minute

Prop Case 2 minutes

Opp Prep 1 minute

Opp Case 2 minutes

Prop/Opp Crossfire 3 minutes

Prop Rebuttal 2 minutes

Opp Rebuttal 2 minutes

We will most likely run the finals for SPAR late as a showcase round before awards.

All Other Events

Patterns will run as follows: Pattern A: Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, Parliamentary Pattern

B: ADS, Radio, Poetry, DI, Inform, Oratory, SPAR, Impromptu

Pattern C: Prose, HI, Duo, POI, Big Questions

Competitors can double enter in Pattern B & Pattern C if they are not competing in Big Questions. If you have a student competing in SPAR, please let them know that if they choose to double enter they should go to SPAR first. See schedule below for more information. We will follow OSAA guidelines for all events. We will offer novice and open divisions of each event (except for SPAR) if entry numbers allow.
