CSUF Blumer Invitational

2018 — Fullerton, CA/US

California State University, Fullerton

26th Blumer Speech and Debate Invitational

Saturday May 5th, 2018

We would like to extend the invitation on behalf of CSUF Forensics to the 26th semi-annual Blumer Speech and Debate Invitational to be held on campus on Saturday, May 5th, 2018.  The Blumer tournament provides a great opportunity for your novice students in Public Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Introduction to Human Communication, or Essentials of Argumentation/Debate to get some practice, competition and/or extra-credit, and perhaps join the team next season.

Students in HCOM classes (CSUF), COMM classes (Fullerton College), and equivalent classes at other institutions are eligible to participate in Individual Events; any students are eligible to compete in debate (especially useful for Argumentation students).  This is a small, informal, and fun event for all.  We can't hold this event without your students, so please encourage them to participate!

·         For Individual Events, we will be offering two preliminary rounds of competition and a final round for all events.  Students must compete in ALL rounds to which they advance.  Events will have four categories: Informative, Persuasive, Oral Interpretation, and Impromptu.

o   If you have students interested in participating in Oral Interpretation, please have them contact me at cblumer@fullerton.edu for more information.

·         Debate will run Policy style with Rookie and Open divisions (see attached invitation).  Students MUST have a partner to enter.

o   If you need additional information on debate, please contact Joel Salcedo, CSUF Assistant Director of Forensics, at josalcedo@fullerton.edu.

Attached you will find more detailed important tournament information, such as descriptions of individual events and procedures and the entry form.  Feel free to post this information on Titanium for your classes, and make copies of the attached flyer and entry form to hand out to your students.  All entries are due by 7:00pm Wednesday, May 2.

***Please check the judging requirements.  Please let us know ASAP whether or not you can judge.  We do not want to have to institute an entry limit per instructor if we do not have enough judges.***

26th BLUMER SPEECH AND DEBATE INVITATIONAL

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Deadline: All entries are due by 7:00pm, Wednesday, May 2.

Event Procedures:

·         Individual Events have four event categories (Informative, Persuasive, Oral Interpretation, and Impromptu).  Students must compete in ALL rounds to which they advance.

o    Individual Events are limited to students enrolled in HCOM classes (CSUF), COMM classes (FC), and equivalent classes at other institutions.  First-semester novices on Forensics teams are also welcome.

o   Debate will be policy style, with both Rookie and Open divisions.  Any student may participate.  You MUST have a partner to enter.  For more information, see the attached debate invitation.

Double Entries: Double entries are accepted in Individual Events across the four event categories but not within each event category.  For example, a student can be entered in both Persuasion and Impromptu, but cannot be entered with two persuasive speeches.  Notify me if you have a student who is double entered, as there are a few important procedures he/she should be aware of to allow things to run smoothly and on time.  Students cannot enter both Individual Events and Debate.  No triple entries.

Judge requirement:

·   Judges can be instructors, graduate students, extra credit undergrads (typically in argumentation, not 100-level classes), or possibly other adult humans you may bring along for company (please check with us).

o Individual Events: Bring one judge for every 6 entries, or fraction thereof.

o Debate: One judge is required for every 2 teams.

·   Please let us know if this is an extreme hardship for you—otherwise, please bring judges.  We never know how many judges are going to show up.

Please enter your judges by Wednesday, May 2

Competitor and Judge Registration:

Individual Events registration will take place at 10:00am on the 1st floor of McCarthy Hall breezeway.

Participants who have not registered by 10:30am will be forfeit.

Participants who have not registered by 8:30am will be forfeit.

Notes: Notecards are allowed in Individual Events; using an electronic device such as a tablet or phone in place of notecards in Individual Events is not allowed.

Event postings for rounds:

Postings for Individual Events will be in the Individual Events student lounge area.  Postings will tell students which classroom their event will be in for each round, as well as the order in which they will be speaking.  Keep in mind, students will have a different room, judge, and speaking order for each round.

Postings for Debate will be in the debate student lounge area.

26th Blumer Speech and Debate Invitational

Policy Debate Tournament Invitation

We would like to extend the invitation on behalf of CSUF Forensics to the 26th semi-annual Blumer Speech and Debate Invitational to be held on campus on Saturday, May 5th, 2018.

We are excited to offer two divisions of policy debate:

The Rookie Division

This format will be a closed-source debate experience that is ideal for new debaters, such as students in argumentation courses. The focus of the debate is on communication, reasoning, and stock issues. Debaters are limited to evidence provided in the evidence packet which include stock issues, disadvantages and counterplans. No outside sources/evidence may be used. Formal debate theory is not assumed and debaters should adjust their arguments toward a judge with little to no prior debate experience.

The Open Division

This format is an open-source debate experience intended to challenge debate students to think critically about the resolution. The focus of this debate expands to include critical arguments, critiques, topicality, and theory arguments. Debaters in this division are not limited to the evidence packet and may use outside research. Judges will have prior debate experience and understand the norms, methods, and theories of policy debate.

The goals of the tournament

• Provide a tournament-based debate experience for both experienced and non-experienced competitors.

• Provide a format that is evidence-oriented while training students to appeal to audiences of varying experience.

• Teach students how to develop arguments, focus on key points of clash, and put together complex ideas as they speak for/against a specific resolution; we seek the highest-quality argument with the least jargon or stylized debate structure

• Provide for high-quality, local competition that does not require extensive travel budgets

• Debate issues of contemporary relevance that resonate with students

Rules for judging

• Judges should render their decisions based on the quality of the logic and evidence presented; speaker points are awarded for presentation. Speaker points are awarded on a 25-30 point scale. (To the nearest .5) Ties are not allowed between speakers in the same round. Judges should not have a preconceived “judging philosophy”. It is preferred but not required that judges hold college degrees. Graduate students, faculty members, and laypersons are welcome.

·    Judges judging a round in the rookie division are encouraged to “turn-off” previous debate training and judge the round on quality of reasoning and refutation appropriate for general audiences.

·    Judges evaluating rounds in the open division should have previous experience judging debate events and a general understanding of policy debate stock issues.

Rules for competing

·   Be respectful.

·   Debaters should not research during the round.

·   Teams may “tag team” cross examination, however the judge should consider the speakers effectiveness in both their speech and cross-examination when awarding speaker points.

·   Debaters should not have contact with coaches during the round.

Important things you need to know (see page 2 for schedule and speaking times)
