Event Description:
Criteria:
For a Solo Musical Theatre (SM) performance, the student must present one (1) musical selection from a
published score written for musical theatre. The judges will consider how well the piece is acted as well as
how well it is sung.
- The combining of multiple characters' lyrics to create a solo performance is not allowed.
- The performance may contain dialogue if included in the libretto, however, it should primarily be a "sung and not spoken" selection.
- One (1) chair may be safely used during the performance. No other scenic elements or furniture are allowed. "Safely" means that items may be used in a safe manner but should not be used as props (e.g., pushed over, lifted, etc.).
- The performer should slate at the start of the performance and include the performer’s name, titles of selections being performed (e.g., "Don't Rain on My Parade" from Funny Girl ), and the name of the playwrights(s) and/or composer(s).
- Scenes must be presented from memory. Scripts may not be used.
- Time limit is 5 minutes with a 30 second grace period (if the performer goes beyond the time limit, the performer may not be ranked first). There is no time minimum..
- Time begins with the first word or acting beat (if it precedes the first word) of the presentation.
- Note: It is the expectation that performances are the artistic creation of the performer(s). If there is suspicion of plagiarism, please be prepared to cite the source that was copied and consult with the tournament director.
