Novice Oratory

Event Description:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Speech should be the speaker’s original work and delivered from memory; they should have a copy on hand if judges request a review.

2. Judges should not use a script to follow along; instead, they should focus on the speaker’s delivery and performance.

3. Open Division orators are allowed no more than 100 quoted words; Novice Division orators are allowed no more than 50 quoted words. Judges should use the speaker's script as a guide; if speakers exceed the limits, they are dropped one place in the round.

4. An Oratorical speech should be persuasive, dealing with a problem/solution, danger, cause or a eulogy to a specific person.

5. Speakers are dropped one place if they exceed the 8:30 time limit or if the speaker uses a script. However, speakers are NOT disqualified if they use a script.
