Event Description:

Prose/Poetry Reading: Selections must be from a published source. Selections must possess literary merit and be age appropriate. An adequate introduction should be provided. No props may be used. Selections should not be memorized; selections should be read with occasional eye contact and make the printed page “come alive”. Students may choose whether they choose to compete using prose or poetry. Time limit: 4 minutes, maximum. The criteria students will be judged upon includes:

Introduction: Did the introduction give sufficient information to establish the theme, characters, scene, time, and place of the selection?

Delivery: Were the voice, gestures, and facial expressions adapted to the selection? Were the inflections varied and meaningful? Were the tempo and pacing appropriate? Did the movements add to the presentation?

Understanding: Did the speaker appear to have an understanding of the mood, ideas, and theme of the selection?

Characters: Were the characters clearly defined? Were the emotional and mental aspects of characters understood and projected?

Selection: Was the selection well-suited to the speaker? Was the selection of literary merit? Was the cutting adequate and coherent?
