Event Description:

Extemporaneous Speaking is a public speaking event in which a speaker draws three slips of paper out of an envelope. On these slips are questions based on current events. The speaker must choose the question he/she is most comfortable speaking about. The questions asked of the contestant will deal with current events in either Domestic or International issues. After reading the options, the contestant chooses one topic, and then has thirty minutes to write and memorize a speech (5-7 minutes). This speech is then delivered in front of a judge who judges the speech based on content, analysis of the question, and delivery. VHSL allows students to use a 4x6 notecard.

1. Laptops will be allowed in prep room. (NSDA rule) 2. Laptops will not be allowed to access WiFi. (NSDA rule) 3. Laptops will not be allowed to plug into outlets. Laptops must run on their own battery power. (NSDA rule) 4. Cellphones are not allowed in the prep room period. (NSDA rule) 5. Students will be permitted to use one 4x6 index cards, but not required. (VHSL rule. NSDA does not allow ANY papers to leave prep room en route to competition room.)
