New York City Invitational Debate and Speech Tournament
2018 — Bronx, NY/US

First of all, thanks to all the debate judges for getting their paradigms in. This level of transparency should benefit everyone. By the way, your paradigm will be available at any tournament in the future, and you can update it to your heart’s content.
Meanwhile, as the tournament approaches, now is the time for judges to make sure that they have any conflicts noted in tabroom. This is very simple to do—you can enter them on the tabroom homepage—and once it’s done, it’s good for the ages. Tabroom will remember from tournament to tournament.
Teams are also responsible for noting conflicts. Conflicts entered by teams, unlike those entered by judges, are not permanent, and need to be done for each tournament.
The full explanation of what comprises a conflict, and the penalties for unreported conflicts, can be found here: http://www.jimmenick.com/vault/conflicts_judges.pdf As a general rule, the tab room usually finds out about a conflict after a pairing has been released. In a world of MJP, this means that a substitute judge will be assigned to the round, usually at about 4 levels less desirable in pref terms. So if you have prefs, and you have conflicts, report the latter to preserve the former.
Do note that eballots are being used in the debate divisions. Most judges are familiar with the process, but for newcomers, or those doodlebrains who think that pressing the START button doesn’t apply at their ethereal level of adjudication, we offer this document as a full introduction to e-ballots: http://www.jimmenick.com/vault/goodejudge.pdf
Finally, a bug has been reported in tabroom indicating that prefs in LD open and close at the same time. While this level of speed-ranking would be entertaining to watch, in reality prefs will open tomorrow at noon and close Friday at 2:00 p.m., right before the end of registration. We have reported this bug to the tabroom.com authorities.
