Chesapeake District Tournament
2020 — US
Text of message
Dear Chesapeake coaches,
Many thanks to all of you for attending the Chesapeake District Tournament this year! We enjoyed hosting you and we hope that you and your students had a good experience. We had 141 entries in attendance from 22 schools, up from 122 entries the previous year. We look forward to continued growth in 2021!
The results in all events are now posted on Tabroom. There were 3 qualifiers in LD, PF, US Extemp, Duo, DI, and OO. Big Questions had one qualifier and all Policy, Congress, International Extemp, Informative, POI, and HI had two.
Congratulations to all of our qualifiers and top finishers, and all of our student and adult special award recipients:
Student of the Year: Celeste Cubbage, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart
Coach of the Year: Aimee Sann, Notre Dame Prep
New Coach of the Year: Austin Oliver, Gilman
Alumni of the Year: Cayman Giordano, Loyola Blakefield
Communicator of the Year: Arjun Banerjee, Reservoir HS
Volunteer of the Year: Howard Scott, awarded posthumously
Administrator of the Year: Tom Durkin, John Carroll HS
Since some students qualified in multiple events but they can only attend nationals in one event, and since some students may not be able to attend nationals, the final list of qualifiers may not match the order of finish announced at the awards ceremony. Please do not confirm any travel plans until you have heard directly from NSDA about registration.
If you know now (or learn at some point in the future) that a qualifier will not be able to attend nationals, your school’s chapter advisor MUST DECLINE their bid on the NSDA registration page (which will open on March 1st) so that the next student in line may be called up. Please DO NOT leave that next student in limbo … travel to Albuquerque is expensive already and likely to get costlier the closer we get to nationals, so failing to decline a spot in a timely fashion will likely prevent other students from attending as well. This happened last year and no one wants to see it happen again.
With point entry, do not manually add student points for the district tournament ... district points are processed separately by NSDA and all entries receive bonus points. Choose the autopost feature when you visit the point entry application.
Found items include a tablet and assorted thermoses and water bottle. If someone from your team is missing one of these items, let me know and we will find a way to get them to you.
There is one additional opportunity for NSDA qualification: World Schools Debate. Each district is permitted to field two teams of 3-5 members (not necessarily from the same school), comprised of students that competed at Districts and did not otherwise qualify to the national tournament. If you have any such team members that would like to be considered for the District World Schools teams, please forward their names to firstname.lastname@example.org by 11 PM on Sunday March 1st, so that the District Committee may consider them. We hope to have the teams named next week so that you can get your NSDA registrations in and begin your travel planning accordingly.
Loyola will be hosting two additional competitive opportunities this season, and registration for both is currently OPEN. The State of Maryland Speech and Debate Association Championship on March 28th is open to ALL students and schools from DC, Maryland, and Delaware. Additional details can be found at http://smsda.tabroom.com. The Ronald Reagan Great Communicator Debate Series is on April 4th, and is open to ALL schools. Additional details can be found at http://reaganloyola.tabroom.com and at https://www.reaganfoundation.org/education/scholarship-programs/great-communicator-debate-series/. We hope that you and your friends will be able to join us for these!
We are in consultation with our area leagues regarding the date of next year’s Chesapeake District Tournament, and plan to announce that date shortly.
Thanks again for all you do for speech and debate in the Chesapeake region!
