Here is the initial email regarding the Debate and Congress Qualifier April 17-18. We are sending this now because a number of schools are leaving on Spring break this weekend and we wanted this information in your hands now. Please know there is every likelihood of this qualifier being changed or worse, canceled due to the coronavirus. However, in the meantime, deadlines will be enforced. If your school might compete in the Congress qualifier, then please submit legislation ON TIME. Please process your student's initial entry as soon as possible. In this manner, if the qualifier is held, we may proceed normally.

This email is notice of the Virginia NSDA District Qualifiers to be held April 17th and 18th at Fluvanna County High School, 1918 Thomas Jefferson Pkwy, Palmyra, VA 22963. Congress Qualifiers will begin at 8:30 am and end at 4 pm. Debates will begin at roughly 5 pm Friday night and continue until completed on Saturday. BECAUSE THE VIRGINIA DISTRICT IS USING THE NEW PILOT RULES OF NSDA FOR THIS TOURNAMENT, THE TOURNAMENT MIGHT TAKE LONGER ON SATURDAY THAN NORMAL. YOU SHOULD PLAN TO BE WITH US ALL DAY SATURDAY JUST IN CASE. Under the new rules, we are required to debate out all alternate positions. The pilot rules dictate four prelim rounds for all contestants. Prelims will be extended into Saturday morning. I will be providing more information as we get closer to the event. Despite the possible coronavirus concerns please take the following steps now: 1). Go to the Tabroom website and establish your initial entry. 2). Line up your judging now. We cannot accept first year out judges! Our preference would be adult judges with judging experience in multiple events. What you bring to the tournament is the quality of judging we have for the students. They deserve the best we have available. 3). Congress is Friday only. It will begin by 830 on April 17th, plan travel accordingly. 4). Submit Congress legislation NOW ONLY USING THE APPROVED NSDA TEMPLATES ATTACHED WITH THIS EMAIL! We will accept two pieces of legislation per school only. The legislation will be available apx March 24th on the Tabroom website. The docket is set by the district chair and is not amendable to be fair to all entries. 5). Hotels: There are some hotels in the Palmyra area. The Best Western Inn in Zion's Crossing would be a popular choice. There are a lot of hotels a bit further away (30 minutes) in Charlottesville. Make sure you know your school policy on hotels and the coronavirus. So what we need from you is your basic entry, congressional legislation and some patience as we sort through the Coronavirus stuff that may be in play by then. You can re-do, drop or enter the tournament as late as April 10th. If you cannot open the templates below, please go to the NSDA web site and this link: https://www.speechanddebate.org/legislation-templates/ Templates Only submit a maximum of two pieces of Congress legislation per school. In the meantime please let me know if you have any questions about the qualifier! Harry Strong, Debate Tab NSDA VA Qualifier. 515-202-4078 -----------------------------
