NOMINATIONs for district awards

The Tarheel East District is pleased to offer five additional awards this year. These awards will be presented at the district tournament awards ceremony on March 24th, but nominations must be received by March 23rd. Links to the nomination form and a complete description of each are below. Coaches, students, parents and administrators are all eligible to nominate coaches for these honors.Please pass along this information to anyone who may want to make a nomination.

 

Coach of the Year:

“The function of a coach is to educate students through participation in speech and debate. Students should be treated with the utmost respect, and their welfare should be considered in decisions by coaches at all times.”

Nominees for Tarheel East Coach of the Year must be coaches who:

  • Currently coach at a Tarheel East District school.
  • Are known for their adherence to the National Speech & Debate Association’s Coaches Code of Ethics.
  • Encourage speech and debate education through active support of curricular and/or co-curricular programming.
  • Foster cooperation between the speech and debate program and the rest of the school, showcasing students and their achievements with administrators, school board members, and the community at-large.
  • Lead a continuing dialogue with students, parents, faculty, and staff members to sustain and grow speech and debate participation.
  • Encourage team spirit and play an active role in the speech and debate program.
  • Demonstrate leadership and exemplify committed support to the speech and debate program’s livelihood.
  • Advocate for speech and debate activities within the school and the community at-large.

New Coach of the Year:

“Each District Committee may award a District New Coach of the Year to a deserving member coach in their district, and from those district-level award winners, a National New Coach of the Year is selected.”

To be eligible for nomination, a high school coach must:

  • Currently work as a high school speech/debate coach in a Tarheel East District member school.
  • Have a coaching merit date on or after July 1, 2018.
  • Plan to continue working as a high school speech/debate coach next year at an NSDA member school.
  • Agree to be nominated.

Nominees must be coaches who:

  • Are known for their adherence to the National Speech & Debate Association’s Coaches Code of Ethics.
  • Encourage speech and debate education through active support of curricular and/or co-curricular programming.
  • Foster cooperation between the speech and debate program and the rest of the school, showcasing students and their achievements with administrators, school board members, and the community at-large.
  • Lead a continuing dialogue with students, parents, faculty, and staff members to sustain and grow speech and debate participation.
  • Encourage team spirit and play an active role in the speech and debate program.
  • Demonstrate leadership and exemplify committed support to the speech and debate program’s livelihood.

Assistant Coach of the Year:

“Each District Committee may award a District Assistant Coach of the Year to a deserving member coach in their district, and from those district-level award winners, a National Assistant Coach of the Year is selected.”

To be eligible for nomination, a high school coach must:

  • Currently work as an assistant high school speech/debate coach in a Tarheel East District member school (each school may determine its own definition of assistant coach).
  • Plan to continue working as a high school speech/debate coach (as either an assistant or an advisor) next year at an NSDA member school.
  • Agree to be nominated.

Nominees must be coaches who:

  • Are known for their adherence to the National Speech & Debate Association’s Coaches Code of Ethics.
  • Encourage speech and debate education through active support of curricular and/or co-curricular programming.
  • Foster cooperation between the speech and debate program and the rest of the school, showcasing students and their achievements with administrators, school board members, and the community at-large.
  • Lead a continuing dialogue with students, parents, faculty, and staff members to sustain and grow speech and debate participation.
  • Encourage team spirit and play an active role in the speech and debate program.
  • Demonstrate leadership and exemplify committed support to the speech and debate program’s livelihood.

Alum of the Year:

"The Alum of the Year Award showcases a speech and debate alumni from your district who has utilized their speech and debate talents to achieve success for themselves and the speech and debate community. "

To be eligible for nomination, an alum must:

  • Have graduated from a school that is a Tarheel East District member
  • Have competed within the Tarheel East District during their time in Speech & Debate
Nominees must be alums who:
  • Used their speech & debate talents to achieve success for themselves post high school graduation.
  • Demonstrate and exemplify committed support of speech and debate’s livelihood.
  • Advocate for speech and debate activities within the community at-large.

Administrator of the Year:

“The National Speech and Debate Association annually recognizes outstanding high school administrators who have succeeded in providing high-quality opportunities for students in speech and debate programming as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.”

To be eligible for nomination, a high school administrator must:

  • Currently work as an administrator (Principal, Head of School, Headmaster, Assistant Principal, Division Director) in a Tarheel East District member school or school system.

Nominees must be administrators who:

  • Encourage speech and debate education through active support of speech and debate programs and teams.
  • Foster cooperation between the speech and debate program and the rest of the school, showcasing students and their achievements with teachers, parents, school board members, and the community at-large.
  • Lead a continuing dialogue with students, parents, faculty, and staff members to sustain and grow speech and debate participation.
  • Demonstrate leadership and exemplify committed support to the speech and debate program’s livelihood.
  • Advocate for speech and debate activities within the school and the community at-large.
