National PF and LD Challenges

The National Public Forum and LD Challenge is a by-application only specialty tournament where competitors get to pick their opponents! The format is simple: Rounds 1 and 2 are pre-scheduled. After round 2, we move to challenge rounds, where winners from the previous round get to select their opponent for the next round. From round 3 on, the tournament is double-elimination!  The event will run on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at John F. Kennedy High School.

This event is by-application and we will fill the competition with selections based on previous record and geography.  Links to the online application are at the bottom of this page.  A school may apply as many PF teams and LDers as it wishes.

Entry Notes

Up to 16 PF teams and 16 LDers will be accepted.  Consideration for entry will be based on previous success in Public Forum and geographic diversity.  Schools may submit as many applications as they choose. One application per team, please.

Fees

Each PF team and LD competitor that is accepted and entered into the Challenge will be assessed an entry fee of $50.  This fee will include breakfast, lunch and dinner on the tournament day.

Deadlines

All applications must be September 28, 2018 at 4:00 pm to be considered for entry. Late applications will be placed on the wait-list.

Structure

There will be two preliminary rounds.  The remaining rounds will be challenge style and double-elimination

Challenge

In elimination-rounds, teams will be grouped according to prelim records.  In the first elimination round, a random draw will occur within each group (undefeated, one-loss, two-loss) and the competitors will select their opponents with the top group picking opponents first.  Subsequent elimination rounds will allow competitors that have won the previous elimination round to pick their opponents first (random draw within win/loss groups).  Teams may not pick opponents they have previously met until Semifinals or unavoidable.  Once there are two teams remaining, the final round will occur, regardless of wins/losses.

Application
