Jersey Shore Invitational at Monmouth University

2017 — NJ/US

Please see below for full invite text.  Tab will be by Vik Keenan (New School).  For Tabroom or Entry issues (including post deadline changes) please contact Vik at vikeenan@gmail.com or 347-683-6894.  For Hotel reservation issues, hospitality, or accommodation questions please contact Joe Patten through contact information below.  Please email Vik to affirmatively confirm mobility considerations for tab, division restrictions for judges, and specific judge constraints.

Preemptive scheduling notes:  Currently there are 3 divisions: Novice, JV, Open.  Each division has 6 prelims, 5 on Saturday, and 1 on Sunday followed by Elims.  Dinner will be provided by the tournament between rounds 4 & 5.

If there are 34 or more entries in Novice, Novice will have 5 Prelims (Saturday) and break to partial double during Round 6.

If it is no longer mathematically possible to sustain JV and Open in separate divisions while preserving competitive standards, we will collapse JV/Open and have a JV Break Out Final as well. However; the priority will be to preserve separate JV/Open entries to facilitate educational opportunities for experienced novices to move up divisions, encourage successful JV teams to choose their move to Open, and preserve an educational space for non-novice eligible debaters who had limited or no experience in policy debate prior to this year.  An announcement will be made on Friday, Nov 17th if divisions will need to collapse.

JERSEY SHORE INVITATIONAL AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY (November 18-19)

We are pleased to announce the invitation to participate in the Jersey Shore Invitational at Monmouth University to be held from November 18-19.  This year's policy debate tournament will feature six preliminary rounds of competition including five on Saturday and one on Friday, and break rounds on Sunday. We will be debating the following. Resolved: The United States Federal Government Should Establish National Health Insurance in the United States.

We want the tournament to be a great experience for everyone and hope that the tournament Hotel on the beach will be an inviting backdrop for debaters to build friendships across campuses.  The registration fee is $45.00 per person (debater ($90 per team, 45 per coach, or judge).  Each school is responsible for securing three rounds of judging for every team registered at the tournament.  Teams will be charged $150 for every uncovered team. The tournament will provide continental breakfast, baked ziti and salad lunch, and pizza for dinner on Saturday, and continental breakfast and lunch on Sunday.

The tournament offers competition in three divisions of policy debate: open, junior varsity and novice divisions. We will be using a 30-point scale with a tenth of a point increments (e.g. 27.1, 27.2 etc) on individual speaking scores.

Our tournament is CEDA sanctioned and will comply with CEDA’s Statement on Sexual Harassment and Discrimination and the Statement of Ethical Principles.  Time limits for speeches are 9-3-6 with ten minutes of preparation time.  Rounds one and two will be pre-determined and rounds three through six will be power matched.  .

BEACH FRONT HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS: We reserved large rooms at $104.00 a night at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa Hotel.  The hotel has beach access and is only three miles from campus in Long Branch, NJ.  The hotel is on the beach and most rooms have ocean views.  The Hotel also has an indoor and outdoor pool, a deluxe fitness center, a full service European Spa, a cocktail lounge and onsite restaurants and dry cleaning.  The hotel is also a 5 minute walk on the boardwalk to Pier Village, where you have access to plenty of restaurants, pizza parlors, shops etc.    The Hotel is located at One Ocean Boulevard, Long Branch, New Jersey 07740 and the Hotel phone number is (800) 411-6493 or (732) 571-4000. If you have any questions, please contact me at (732) 263-5742 (office) (732) 930-4300 (cell) or by e-mail at jpatten@monmouth.edu.  Please let me know if there’s anything at all we can do for you or your students to help make this a wonderful tournament and weekend.
