Travis Lamb and John Samqua, Coaches

401 SW Gage Blvd. Topeka, KS 66606

Coaches,

You are cordially invited to the Mary Beth McCarthy JV Debate Invitational at Hayden Catholic High School  on December 7, 2019.

Topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States.

Division: JV. We define a JV debater as a competitor in their 1st or 2nd year. However if you have students whose skills or experience would otherwise define them as JV that would also be acceptable.

Format: 8-3-5 with 8 minutes of prep.

Fees: $5.00 per team or whatever you charged for your tourney.

Entries: Entries will be accepted via Tabroom.  We are able to accommodate approximately 40 teams in a one division, junior varsity tournament only; therefore, each school may enter up to 3 teams. All entries will be initially "wait listed.”  You may enter NEW entries in Tabroom before December 5, 2019 @ 5:00PM. You will have until December 5, 2019 at 5:00PM to make online drops and name changes. Should entries become an issue, entries will be prioritized as follows: first to Flint Hills, second to people who have reciprocated to Hayden, and third in the order received.

Wireless: Students may email speech documents, but no other WiFi use is allowed during the round. There is a guest wifi that should be available without a password, but since it is technology, there are no guarantees.

Schedule: Debaters will participate in five rounds of competition. There will be no semi-finals or finals. The tournament schedule will be pre-set during rounds one and two and afterwards delay-power matched (Rd. 3 powered from Rd. 1, Rd. 4 from rounds 1 and 2, and Rd. 5 from rounds 1,2, and 3.

Judging: Single judges will evaluate most rounds, with the possibility of some panels throughout the tournament. In the event of a panel, "panel math" will be used to determine the ranks awarded to each debater in the round.  Any coach or sponsor may be asked to judge; please advise your sponsor of this possibility.

Awards: Medals will be given to the top six teams in the tournament and sweepstakes plaques will be issued to the top three schools with the best three-team record. The final rankings will be determined by win/loss record, speaker ranks, opposition record and opposition speaker ranks, in that order.

Lunch: There will not be a concession stand. Restaurants like Subway and Arby’s are close, but we have a small lunch window of time. Your best option is to have your students bring a lunch, or money for the vending machines.
