Diana Vazquez Duque Invitational at Oregon City High School

2019 — Oregon City, OR/US

Diana Vazquez Duque Invitational at Oregon City High School

March 2nd, 2019

The OCHS Speech and Debate team invites you to our fourth annual high school tournament on Saturday, March 2, 2019. We are striving to offer a high-quality tournament with a full range of events to help prepare for Districts. In that spirit, all events will be open division, and Oregon State rules will be followed.

Diana Vazquez Duque is a former team captain whose philosophy and influence has greatly affected the direction and spirit of our team. At Diana’s suggestion, we use funds from this tournament to eliminate or reduce as many barriers to participation as possible, including entry fees, ASB fees, access to food at tournaments, and uniforms, so that ALL students have access to a valuable, educational extracurricular activity. In honor of Diana, we have also committed to donating 10% of our total profit to other clubs or resources that help students at risk. Thank you for your support.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IMPORTANT CHANGE: We are switching to electronic balloting through Tabroom. This means all judges MUST HAVE A TABROOM ACCOUNT PRIOR TO JUDGING. It would also be really helpful if judges brought a laptop. We will provide a limited number of ChromeBooks, but most judges would probably prefer to work on their own machine. If you are unsure how to create TabRoom accounts for judges, please refer to the directions at the end of this invitation and posted on the website. You will not be able to add your judges unless they have a TabRoom account.

Events (NOTE: there is no Novice division; everything is Open):

Pattern A:  ADS, DI, Duo, Informative, Extemp, HI, Impromptu, Oratory, Poetry, Prose, Radio, POI

Pattern B:   CX, Public Forum, LD, Public, LIELL

Pattern C:   Student Congress

NOTE: CX will start earlier than other pattern B events. CXers can still enter Pattern A events, however they should leave early in order to make their CX start time.

NOTE: We will also be hosting the Nat Quals tournament for Big Questions Debate at this site. Students can register for EITHER the DVD Invitational OR BQD. These tournaments will conflict with each other; they cannot register for both.

LD will use the March/ April topic:

Resolved: The illegal use of drugs ought to be treated as a matter of public health, not of criminal justice.

PF will use the March topic:

Resolved: The United States should promote the development of market rate housing in urban neighborhoods.

Restrictions:

  • Students may enter up to 3 different events; two can be in the same pattern.

  • Debaters may not double enter in their pattern

  • Extemp speakers may not enter another event in Pattern A or Policy

  • Congress conflicts with everything; if you sign up for Congress, you cannot compete in anything else.

  • Maximum three entries per event per school

  • We will also be hosting the Nat Quals tournament for Big Questions Debate at this site. Students can register for EITHER the DVD Invitational OR BQD. These tournaments will conflict with each other; they cannot register for both.

Awards:

Lovely framed certificates will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each event.

Fees: If you pay your fees at registration, I will waive the $30.00 school fee.

School fee: $30.00

Individual Events: $7.00

Congress: $7.00

Debate Entries: $13.00

Uncovered Entry Fine $10.00 per uncovered entry

Judging:

One judge will cover 5 entries. It’s easier not to have to juggle multiple judging categories. Add up the total number of entries you have for both IEs and debate. Now divide by 5. That’s the number of judges you owe. Any uncovered entries are fined at $10 each. Schools with CX teams must bring CX judges!

Food:

There is no food within walking distance; students are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. We will have food available for purchase (cash only!)We will provide a free breakfast of bagels, yogurt, fruit, and coffee.

Registration:

Register via tabroom.com. Initial registration is due by Tuesday, February 26th. Adds will be allowed up until 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 28th. Fees will be calculated at 5:00 PM on Thursday. YOU CAN CONTINUE TO DROP ENTRIES ONLINE THROUGH TABROOM UP TO 7:00 AM ON THE DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT (3/2/19), but any drops after 5:00 PM Thursday will not alter the amount due.

The Basics of Electronic Balloting

First off, I want to acknowledge that this takes some extra steps on your part, and it can be kind of a pain to set up the first time. So why are we doing it? Because once it’s set up, it makes life So. Much. Easier. Judges can be notified and accept a ballot even if they’re not in the room when we announce. Judges can write more, and can continue to edit comments, even after they submit a decision. We don’t have to deal with making copies, illegible handwriting, or misplaced ballots. In short, this helps the tournament run on time, gives the students clearer feedback, and is just easier all around...except for the initial setup, which should be taken care of ASAP!

Step 1:

Potential judges, create your Tabroom account at www.tabroom.com

Here’s a handy “how to:” http://docs.tabroom.com/Sign_Up

Step 2:

Potential Judges, email the team’s coach to let them know you created an account and tell them the email address you used.

Step 3 (THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT!):

Coaches, search for that judge using the email address they signed up with, and link them to your team. To do this, login in to Tabroom and click on the “Judges” tab.

Then click on “Add a new judge” on the right hand side of the screen.

Search for a judge using their email address and link them to your team. If you simply create a new judge, they will not be linked to your team, they will not receive ballots properly, and it will add to the early morning chaos and frustration of starting the tournament. Seriously. Please take the time to properly link them...Pretty please.
