Event Description:

In this one-on-one format, students debate a topic ranging from individual freedom versus the collective good to economic development versus environmental protection. Propositions of value are debated with the emphasis on developing logical argumentation rather than an accumulation of information. Debaters construct value-driven cases that are consistent, coherent, combine original analysis with carefully chosen evidence, and tackle the issues in the resolution head-on. Students may consult evidence gathered prior to the debate but may not used the internet in round. An entire debate consists of constructive speeches, rebuttals, and cross-examination.

Varsity Resolution: In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions.

Novice Resolution: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.
