Event Description:

Public Forum debate involves teams of two, debating a topic concerning a current event. Proceeding a coin toss, the winners choose which side to debate (PRO or CON) or which speaker position they prefer (1st or 2nd), and the other team receives the remaining option. Students present cases, engage in rebuttal and refutation, and also participate in a “crossfire” with the opportunity to question the opposing team.

In Public Forum there is no presumption favoring either side. The burden of proof is equal. Speakers will be asked to present constructive and summary positions from a standing position. Crossfire periods will be handled with individuals standing for crossfire and the teams seated at their respected tables or desk for grand crossfire. There will be four minute constructive speeches each set of two followed by a three minute crossfire exchange. Each speaker will alternately ask one question at a time. Then there will be two two-minute summaries by the first speakers from each side followed by “grand crossfire” in which all four debaters participate. The debate ends with a two minute “final focus” by the second speaker from each team.

Timing follows the new NSDA rules. No internet use in debate events.
